Manchester United released a statement on Thursday confirming that they have extended the contract of goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The new contract extends the term by one year, until June 30, 2027, on top of the contract expiring this summer.
The 40-year-old Heaton came through Manchester United's youth academy and spent much of his early career on loan at Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers, Rochdale, and Wycombe Wanderers. In search of consistent playing time, he left Manchester United and played for Cardiff City, Bristol City, Burnley, and Aston Villa.
In July 2021, Heaton returned to Manchester United after an 11-year absence on a free transfer. He has mainly played a substitute role at Manchester United, making only 3 appearances to date.
Regarding the contract extension, Manchester United's Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, commented: "We are delighted that Tom has signed a one-year extension. Everyone knows that his leadership and professionalism play a crucial role within the team."
"Tom contributed greatly to and provided strong support for Senner Lamens in his first season in the Premier League; his consistent dedication and attitude set a very high standard for our goalkeeping team."
Heaton himself said: "It is an honor to continue playing for Manchester United. You can feel the determination and ambition that the club has shown to achieve success. I am very much looking forward to playing a role in driving the team forward and helping the team to strive for the highest honors."
He added, "I feel that every moment as a player at Manchester United has been unforgettable. So I am incredibly happy to be able to extend my contract for another year."
“I think the club is in excellent form right now, and we have achieved very good results this season. We have returned to the Champions League and continue to rise. Therefore, renewing my contract was a very easy decision for me.”
