NBA player Terry Rozier, who is suspected of involvement in a federal gambling case, has applied to the judge to change his bail conditions.
His lawyer stated that the existing restrictions have affected Rozier's salary arbitration and could deprive him of the opportunity to participate in the upcoming NBA free agency market.
In court filings on Wednesday, Rozier's lawyer, Jim Trusty, requested the lifting of the restriction prohibiting Rozier from contacting his former team, the Charlotte Hornets.
Currently, Rozier is in arbitration with the NBA and the Miami Heat regarding his base salary for the 2025-26 season. The arbitrator previously determined that Rozier's bail conditions, which restricted him from contacting the Hornets and prevented him from playing for or facing the Hornets, constituted a breach of his contractual obligation to play.
Lawyers pointed out that the NBA free agency period begins on June 30. If the contact ban against the Hornets remains in effect, Rozier will lose the opportunity to be signed by any NBA team due to "inability to perform service." Prosecutors have agreed to lift the contact ban against the Heat but still oppose lifting the ban against the Hornets.
Terry Rozier was arrested last October and suspended by the league for allegedly manipulating games while playing for the Charlotte Hornets in March 2023. He previously pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. On June 10th of this year, he will be arraigned on additional charges of sports bribery and fraud.
