LaMelo Ball joins the Timberwolves with hopes that he will improve their competitiveness.

According to ESPN, the Minnesota Timberwolves believe that new addition LaMelo Ball can improve the team's competitiveness and help them take the final step in their pursuit of the championship.

In a four-team trade involving the Timberwolves, Nets, Hornets, and Bulls, the team acquired Lonzo Ball and guard Josh Green , while sending out Naz Reed and multiple future draft assets, including an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, multiple first-round pick swaps, and second-round picks.

Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly stated, " I believe he will elevate our team's level, and our environment will help him continue to grow. " The team hopes that by acquiring Ball, a top-tier point guard, they can alleviate the pressure on star player Anthony Edwards in terms of ball handling and playmaking.

Connelly admitted that the team paid a huge price, but the goal is to contend for the championship. "We may not have many draft picks in the next decade, but quality is more important than quantity."

Although Ball has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, with an attendance rate of only 43% from 2022 to 2025 , he helped the Hornets reach the play-in tournament in the 2025-26 season.
