According to Rayo Vallecano's official statement, López has signed on a new three-year contract with the club which runs until the summer of 2029.
About Unai López
The 30-year-old Unai López was born on October 30, 1995, in Errenteria, Basque Country, Spain. He is 1.70 meters tall and plays as a defensive midfielder.
López joined the youth academy of Antiguoko, a well-known non-league club in the Basque Country, at the age of 13. Two years later, he joined the Real Sociedad youth academy. In 2011, he moved to the youth academy of their county rivals, Athletic Bilbao.
The following year, López began playing for sister team Basconia. In 2013, he started playing for the Athletic Bilbao B, before completing his Athletic Bilbao first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League match against Napoli in August 2014.
In the summer of 2016, López was loaned-out to Leganés, and then in August of the following year, he played on loan for Rayo Vallecano, during which he helped the latter win the Segunda División title.
Upon returning to Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2019, López became a regular starter for the first-team. Over the next two years, he helped the team reach the Copa del Rey final twice.
In August 2021, López returned to Rayo Vallecano.
Since becoming a member of Rayito, López has so far made 222 appearances for the La Liga dark horse in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 15 assists, and helping the team to a surprising run to the UEFA Conference League final.
